We've finally made it to the end and thanks if you've read all or some of the five recaps. Checked a few times but there are no mini previews for this show which is so common for Japanese dramas, that's another thing I like so much more about Korean series as they all have them. On to the action and you can see a few of the events that happened right in the beginning of the show. The group has just four days left on the ship Mikimura and it's time for the students to decide if they want to carry on with their maritime training.
And if they do what do they want to specialize in, as you can see Tsubame wants nothing to do with being an engineer or at least for now. But the major development was that Marin had passed out and had to be brought to the infirmary. There was no major storm but the thunder on the ocean was quite loud and Marin has had a long time problem with thunder. For the first time in her life she admitted the problem to others who vowed to help her conquer it forever.
Final screenshot for the last recap showed the trainer Yokoyama saying 'Marin's the daughter of that Sakamoto Toshishiko?'. He was a somewhat famed yachtsman who had died at sea ten years ago and he was the father of Marin. During that voyage Marin had snuck on board as her father didn't want her sailing with him as he thought Marin was too young. However he had been overjoyed to see his daughter and for the next two days the pair had such an enjoyable time on the ocean.
But soon tragedy struck on the third day as there was an impending storm. It hadn't started yet but there was quite a bit of lightning and thunder in the sky, one clap of thunder was so loud it startled the father so much that he collapsed. Marin was in a panic on what to do and she ended up doing nothing as her father quickly succumbed to a heart attack. Since that day Marin has been blaming herself for her father's death and the trauma is getting worse the older she gets.
Though Marin did admit what her problem has been it was only to two people. One was Yokoyama, at first the students were petrified of him but he's turned out to be an excellent instructor as his #1 priority is the well being of his students. Yokoyama's new #1 priority now is to make sure Marin is cured of her trauma as she'll never become a sailor until that happens. The second person Marin confessed to was her best new friend Tsubame and Marin really spilled her guts out to her.
Marin told her everything about that day and how she was the cause of her father's death. Those thoughts were totally wrong to Tsubame, what could an eight year old girl at sea possibly do to save a man having a heart attack? Though she was correct it still didn't make Marin feel any less guilty, she tried to run away from Tsubame but the pair ended up tangling on a stairwell.
It was no minor scuffle as Marin was slightly out of control and ended up pushing Tsubame down the stairs. She hit her head hard against a wall and was in terrible shape, Marin had a few of her group carry Tsubame to the cafeteria. Don't think it was a life threatening accident but Tsubame wasn't waking up and something needed to be done soon. We didn't see it in an episode but the students had recently taken CPR training which is what Marin began to do on Tsubame.
It wasn't working though and once again Marin was about to enter a state of panic but she never stopped the procedure. The trainer Yokoyama could have jumped in but didn't, he realized that Marin saving Tsubame was the only way she could overcome her trauma from the past. After so much effort Tsubame was finally revived and it really wasn't a major injury though to Marin she saved her friend's life as Yokoyama knew that Marin was now cured.
When that event wrapped up we were getting very close to the end of the series. Though Marin was a lifesaver she still had to pay a penalty for pushing Tsubame down the stairs, that punishment was her and the group spending another day on the ship but to Marin that was no punishment. What we learned in the final two minutes was what became of the group of six students and five of them continued on with their training.
Though she had no desire at first at working on the ocean a life in engineering is what Tsubame chose and she came such a long way as she hated the ships in the beginning. Meanwhile the sea lover Marin became a navigator and the two friends eventually served on the same ship. Made me wonder when as wouldn't it take years to obtain enough training for those positions? Of the four men Arata also became a navigator though on a different ship. What was really shocking was that he ended up getting married to Anju who used to torment his small group.
Kogure remained married and his wife ended up having a daughter. However he hurt himself playing with her and had to miss his first voyage but it was never said what his position was. Shotaro was the student in the group who was very quiet and we never learned much about him, he too became an engineer. And finally there was Yamato who didn't remain on a ship but instead became a designer of them at his father's ship building company. He never did confess his love to Tsubame on the show and as how he's not in season two he never did.
An okay series which I'll give a rating of 8.2/10, it was enjoyable plus the fluffiness never went too overboard. The one problem I had was the length of the episodes plus there were only five of them. Really think eight shows of thirty minutes would have worked out so much better as we only saw them on the ocean for four episodes and many things were too rushed.
Won't give it a high recommendation but if you're a fan of the two stars then you'd want to view it. Still haven't heard if the second season will be subbed but keeping my fingers crossed it will. Am going to continue on with the Korean drama 'Missing' and will have a pair of recaps soon. What I'm up in the air about is what Japanese series to view next. There's a few current ones that I'm interested in that are being subbed which I will watch but prefer waiting until a drama has completed it's run. Sure there will be one that I can find and will try to make sure it's another late night show. Once again thanks for reading these posts and as usual will end off with a slew of screenshots.
